GM James A Wilson Celebration of Life
James A Wilson - TEACHER, TRAINER, MENTOR, FRIEND. He is well respected and recognized within the martial arts community and holds the rank of 10th Degree Black Belt and title of Supreme Grandmaster in Taekwondo from the World Taekwondo Federation. Supreme Grandmaster James A Wilson was also known as the founder of Southwestern Association of Martial Arts, College of Health and Fitness, Casa de Oro, CA. He was also a recognized 9th Dan Grandmaster in Hapkido and Kenpo as well as a Golden Gloves Boxer under Archie “Old Mongoose” Moore. SGM James A Wilson was the instructor of Coach Heidi Sarmiento-Wilson; founder and instructor of the Kickboxing & Marital Arts courses at San Diego Mesa College.

He also has trained in:

In 1968, the Southwestern Association of Martial Arts, College of Health and Fitness (SWAMA) was founded in Casa de Oro, CA.

SWAMA is recognized around San Diego, the state of California, nationally, and internationally as an outstanding college of Martial Arts, Fitness, and Health.

The World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) (HQ in Seoul, Korea); the International Federation (IF) governing the sport of Taekwondo and is a member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) (HQ in Colorado Springs, Colorado); the USOC is the National Olympic Committee for the United States. It's responsible for supporting, entering and overseeing U.S. teams for the Olympic Games.

USA Tae Kwon Do (USAT) (HQ at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado); the National Governing Body of Tae Kwon Do in the US.

The California Unified Tae Kwon Do Association (CUTA); the governing body of Tae Kwon Do for the state California; and

The San Diego Martial Arts Association;

all recognize SWAMA as one of the premier, outstanding schools of martial arts. SWAMA offers instruction in Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Boxing and Kickboxing, Fitness, Health, and Nutrition.

In 1989, Grandmaster Wilson opened the SWAMA location at 9819 Campo Rd., Spring Valley, CA, 91977. This location served as the principal Headquarters, and base of operations for SWAMA.

In 2012, GM James A Wilson was awarded the rank of 10th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and title of Supreme Grandmaster from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

In July 2013, Grandmaster Wilson closed the SWAMA location in Spring Valley, CA. A location that served SWAMA for over 24 years.

As a mentor, James A Wilson has taken many young men & women under his wing and guided those individuals as a father figure. Many of them crossed his path through the training at SWAMA.

From Fall 2004 to Fall 2013, SGM Wilson made guest appearances at least once a semester in the PHYE 233 - Kickboxing course at San Diego Mesa College instructed by one of his students, Coach Heidi Wilson. In Fall 2013, he was a guest instructor in Coach Heidi Wilson's PHYE 232 - Martial Arts course which she taught with Asst. Coach Joe Benedito. He was responsible for why Coach Heidi boxed, taught martial arts and found her true passion in teaching womens self defense.

On February 08, 2015, James A Wilson passed away from heart failure.

On May 16, 2015, Dr. & SGM James A. Wilson was honored with an induction into the International Karate & Kickboxing Hall of Fame.

His Southwestern Association of Martal Arts legacy lives on in Coach Heidi Sarmiento-Wilson, his Grandmasters, Masters, and Instructors, plus the many martial artists who shared in his many teachings.

Taegeuk Pal Jang is the last of eight "taegeuk" forms (i.e., poomsae) used by the Kukkiwon and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). The word "pal" is the number 8 in the sino-Korean numbering system.
